California Shutters

Shutters that fit the opening exactly.

Custom California shutters — also called plantation shutters — measured, built by Vinyl Windows Fashion and installed by our own crew. And because we fit the windows too, we can take down, adjust and refit your existing shutters rather than quietly quoting you for a whole new set.

Why Shutters

Light control you actually use

Blinds get pulled up and left there. Shutters get used, because tilting a louver takes one second and changes the whole room.

A finished opening from the inside. Arched tops, angled reveals and vaulted ceilings are exactly where a made-to-measure shutter beats an off-the-shelf blind.

Wide adjustable louvers let you keep the view and the daylight while cutting glare and blocking sightlines from the street — something no single blind position manages at once.

They read as part of the house

Shutters look like a built-in finish rather than a soft furnishing, which is why buyers price them into the house and nobody expects you to take them when you move.

A second layer at the glass

Closed shutters trap a still air layer against the window, taking the edge off winter drafts and cutting summer heat load. Paired with a good Low-E glass package the difference in a west-facing room is obvious. See the glass data →

Low maintenance

No cords to fray, no slats to bend, no fabric to fade. A wipe with a damp cloth and they look new.

Specify Yours

Your options

Every panel is built to your measured opening. These are the decisions we will walk you through at the measure.

COLOUR

Cotton or Arctic

Two neutral whites. Cotton is the warmer, softer white — it sits comfortably with cream trim, oak floors and traditional casing. Arctic is the cooler, cleaner white, and the right call next to bright white trim and contemporary interiors.

FRAMES

Trim through Z

A trim frame sits flat against flat casing for a clean, minimal edge. A Z frame wraps into the opening and covers the reveal — what you want on older openings where the drywall return is not perfectly square.

LOUVERS

Choose your width

Wider louvers give a cleaner, contemporary look, a more open view when tilted, and fewer lines across the glass. Narrower louvers read as more traditional and suit smaller or divided windows.

DIVIDED PANELS

Independent tilt

On tall windows we can split the panel so top and bottom tilt separately — privacy at eye level, daylight above. The single most useful upgrade on a front-facing room.

TRACK SYSTEM

Bi-fold for patio doors

Standard hinged panels cannot swing clear of a wide sliding door. A bi-fold track lets the panels slide and fold to one side — full coverage when closed, clear access when open. Also works on wide windows and closets.

SHAPES

Bays, bows and arches

Bays and bows are built as separate panels per section with the frames mitred to the angle. Arches and other shapes are templated at the measure. Send a photo and we will tell you what is possible.

The most common shutter regret

Getting the white wrong. Cotton against bright white trim looks dingy; Arctic against cream trim looks cold. We bring both samples to your home so you can hold them against your own casing in your own light — do not choose from a screen.

Removal & Reinstall

Replacing a window? Keep the shutters.

Good shutters outlast the window they were fitted to. Most window companies are not set up to handle them, so they come off, get stacked in a hallway, and you get quoted for a new set. We do the windows and the shutters, so we handle both in one visit.

BEFORE

We check the fit first

At the measure we assess whether your existing shutters can be reused with the new window. New frames sometimes change the opening enough that a reinstall will not work — you hear that before you commit, not on install day.

DURING

Removed, labelled, stored

Panels come off, get labelled by opening, and are stored flat and protected while the window work happens. Nothing gets leaned against a wall waiting to get stepped on.

AFTER

Refit and adjusted

Panels go back on the new opening, hinges are shimmed, and every louver is checked so it holds its angle. Where a frame no longer covers the reveal we can supply a replacement frame without rebuilding the panels.

How It Works

From first call to final walkthrough

STEP 01

Free consultation

We visit your home with colour and frame samples so you can see Cotton against Arctic in your own light. No pressure to buy.

STEP 02

STEP 03

Custom manufacture

Your panels are built to those measurements by Vinyl Windows Fashion. We keep you posted on the production timeline.

STEP 04

Installation

Our crew fits, aligns and adjusts every panel, cleans up, and walks you through operation and care before leaving.

Questions

What is the difference between California shutters and plantation shutters?

Nothing — two names for the same product. “California shutters” is the common term in Ontario; “plantation shutters” is used more in the US and UK. Both describe interior shutters with wide adjustable louvers set in a frame.

Who makes your shutters?

Vinyl Windows Fashion, based in Etobicoke. They build every panel to the measurements we take at your home, and our own crew handles the installation.

How long from order to installation?

Because every panel is made to your measurements, there is a manufacturing lead time after the measure appointment — shutters do not move as fast as our window installs. We confirm the exact timeline in writing when you order and update you if anything shifts.

Do shutters actually help with energy bills?

They help with comfort more than bills. A closed shutter panel adds a still air layer at the glass, reducing the cold radiant feeling in winter and cutting direct solar gain in summer. The bigger energy lever is the glass itself — see our glass guide.

Can I get shutters for just one or two rooms?

Yes. Many customers start with the front of the house for privacy, or a west-facing room for glare, and add more later. We keep your specification on file so later orders match exactly.

Can you do shutters and windows in the same project?

That is the ideal way to do it. One measure, one crew, one schedule — and the shutters are measured against the windows as actually installed rather than against a drawing. It also means nobody is pointing at anyone else if something needs adjusting later.
